Music and AI are reshaping how creativity and rights are protected in today’s digital world. This month, we had the pleasure of chatting to Kelsey Farish, a media lawyer specialising in AI and the creative industries. We first encountered Kelsey at the Glasgow Film Festival. Kelsey has a talent for making complex legal issues, like AI, copyright, and creative rights, not only understandable but genuinely engaging.
In our conversation, we learned more about how she helps artists and creators navigate the rapidly evolving world where technology and creativity collide.
Introducing Kelsey Farish: Legal Expertise in Music and AI
Kelsey describes her role in simple but powerful terms:
“I advise creatives, performers, and founders on the deals that shape their work, rights, and reputation, whether that’s in print, on screen, or online. I advise on all types of media contracts, but my specialism lies where artificial intelligence, identity, and creativity press up against each other.”
Why Kelsey's Work Matters
When asked about the importance of her role, Kelsey sees her role as a support system, not the spotlight.
“All lawyers think their job is important… and that’s sort of the problem! Because the way I see it, I’m only important insofar as I help protect the work my clients do. They’re the ones making things that move people: music, stories, art. That’s the work that matters. I’m just here to make sure no one takes advantage of it.”
For Kelsey, contracts aren’t just paperwork. They’re narratives about control, trust, and risk. Whether it’s negotiating royalties, defining licensing scope, or grappling with the bigger questions like “what happens if my work is used without permission?”, she ensures her clients retain creative control and fair recognition.
Misconceptions About Media Law in the Age of AI and Music
We asked Kelsey what people typically get wrong about her line of work.
“That working in media or entertainment law means parties, premieres, and name-dropping on panels. I mean, it is sometimes, I’ve been really lucky! But it’s also very difficult and intense work: long hours, high stakes, and constant tension.”
The real reward, she says, comes when she can give her clients peace of mind:
“When someone calls and says, ‘I’m worried about this, can you fix this?’ and I can say ‘Yes, and here’s how’, that’s such a gift. Seeing your client create or perform something incredible, knowing you helped a little bit? It’s the best feeling in the world.”
Two Blue Ticks and Trust
The one app Kelsey can’t live without? WhatsApp.
“WhatsApp is messy and immediate and sometimes completely maddening – but that’s where the truth is.
And that’s how I build trust. Some of the most significant professional exchanges I’ve had didn’t come with a paper trail. They came with two blue ticks and a pause before replying.”
